The 40 Year Old Virgin is one of my favorite comedies in recent years. With the release of Knocked Up just a few weeks away, Judd Apatow and company have decided to re-release The 40 Year Old Virgin on DVD in a 2 disc collectors ("Double Your Pleasure") edition.
All of the features from the original release are here, which is excellent because I don't know if I would have bought it if it didn't have the extended "You know how I know you're gay?" scene with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan. In addition to the original features we now have several new deleted scenes, trailer for Knocked Up, Judd's video diaries, Raw Footage and auditions as well as several new featurettes.
The two new "specials" or "featurette's" that are included are "Comedy Central Reel Comedy Roundtable" which is basically the guys from the cast sitting around at a table talking about the movie, how they filmed certain scenes and making fun of random crap. The other is "Cinemax Final Cut" which is just a TV special used to promote the film.
In the end, the new release is much better than the original edition but basically I think it's only worth it if you really love the film and want more of it and there is a ton of extra footage. In one of Apatow's production diaries he had said they shot over one million feet of film. This is impressive because most big budget action movies shoot just a little over half of that. So yeah, go for it. It's worth it.
