This time I thought that maybe I'd review a special edition DVD release
rather than a movie that I've seen at the theatres. The last thing that I
saw was Casino Royale and it was only right that The Bullet did a review for
that rather than myself.
Anywho, I recently bought the new special edition of Home Alone which has
been re-released and for some reason dubbed the "Family Fun Edition" which I
can't really understand. I guess if you put it in the context that maybe a
family might sit down and watch it and you're implying that they may or may
not..but probably will, have fun..then I guess thats OK. However, I
would've come up with a better name..like, "The No Families-More Fun
Edition" or the "Emergency Room Edition" or "The Wet Bandits Edition" I
dunno, I guess its not up to me after all.
Well, basically, everyone has already seen Home Alone so I doubt that I have
to go over the plot or the ending so I guess I can just talk about what
everyone wants to hear about..the extras! There are a plethera of features
on this disc including a game where you have to catch the bandits. Matt
knows more about that, he played it and won, I did not. Also there is a
feature where they talk about the movie now and speak with Macauly Culkin
about basically what he can remember and his thoughts on it. Surprisingly,
he wasn't bitter about it and didn't talk about it in a negative way, which
for some reason I expected him too. They also talk to Daniel Stern and not
to Joe Pecsi which I guess..I can expect as well. He's pretty big to do a
retrosepective for Home Alone! There is also a feature commentary with the
director Chris Columbus and Culkin himself. However, the most appealing
feature was something called "Where's Buzz Now?" Which I assumed they meant
the actor. So, I watched that and it was a hokey thing about what would
have happened to the character "Buzz"..which sorta angered me until the
actor came in at the end. My only thoughts were "wow, Buzz gained a lot of
weight and looks like this guy I know". I guess I could speak a bit about
something that might actually persuade you to buy it. The transfer on this
DVD is incredible. The picture has never looked better, the clarity of the
movie actually makes it seem like a modern movie rather than something that
was made over 15 years ago. Also, it does give you insight into how some of
the stunts were done and the props that were used.
Well..I say that if you're interested enough in the movie, it can probably
be found for a pretty decent price at you local retail outlet. However, I
don't believe that this is a must own..I guess only if you're some sort of
Christmas Super-Fan.
